Episode summary

How the Simple Shoulder Systems app records shoulder range, strength, force plate and outcome measure data, benchmarks each result against normative goals, and turns the results into reports and graphs for patients and referrers.

Ben built the app after failing to find a clear evidence-based battery for shoulder return to sport testing. It collects range of motion, dynamometry, force plate, closed and open chain, lower limb and work-related tests in one place, and compares each score with normative goals. The patient's gender, age (over or under 35) and athlete status decide which normative data are used. Injury details such as diagnosis, dates of injury and surgery, and dominant side are recorded, along with psychological, general and sport-specific outcome measures. Body weight is used to calculate relative strength. Results are shown with a traffic light system: green at or above the goal, amber within one standard deviation below, red well below. Tests left out are not counted. The report page gives an overall rating and editable recommendations that can be saved as a PDF or used as a letter to the referrer, and the graphing page shows progress as a percentage of the goal over time. He finds that showing patients their scores improves buy-in and accountability.
