Episode summary

Why clinicians and trainers tend to overcomplicate exercise prescription, how specialty certifications and schools of thought add confusion, and how a principle-based filter helps judge new methods without a study in hand.

Nick argues that training built on principles rather than methods or trends will not go out of date; what improves over time is how you communicate and refine it. He warns against identifying too closely with one school of thought and asks whether you are using the tool or the tool is using you. His example: knee tucks on a stability ball give the same challenge as on a suspension trainer with far less setup time. Education can add complexity in the form of rigid sequences and jargon, while basic principles get overlooked because they seem too simple. Conflicting schools of thought create paralysis by analysis, when clients pay professionals to think in complex terms but act and communicate simply. Nick calls himself principle-based rather than evidence-based. When a new method makes claims, ask how it fits with what is known about physiology, adaptation, specificity and overload. A claim that contradicts those principles is far more likely wrong than revolutionary.
