Episode summary

Where the real expertise in exercise prescription lies: exercise analysis, individualization, organization and prioritization, rather than complex screening procedures, memorized technique or the training trend of the moment.

Nick, coauthor with Ben Cormack and Jason Silvernail of a paper on the corrective exercise trap, says many professionals chase complexity in formalized evaluation procedures and terms about fascia, posture and biomechanics. He sees that as hitting the bullseye of the wrong target. What gets underrated is the pain relief that general exercise offers, whether cycling, yoga, Pilates or lifting, and the skill of analyzing how forces cross joints, adapting exercise to limitations and deciding order, pairing and priority. Coaching good form can be learned in a week; knowing when not to use an exercise is the expertise. His example is powerlifting's popularity. Methods with max effort and dynamic effort days train both ends of the force-velocity curve, yet people rarely apply that to pulling or single-leg work because they copy the method instead of analyzing the principle behind it. Someone who trains at home twice a week and in a gym once still needs a well organized plan, and building it is what an exercise prescription expert does.
