Episode summary

Emerging leadership trends in physiotherapy, plans for a WCPT leadership academy, the profession's global future including disaster response, and the advice both guests would give themselves as new graduates.

Emma sees a more intentional approach to leadership, treated as a way of thinking at every career stage because leadership affects patient experience, quality and safety. WCPT is in the early stages of a leadership academy to train leaders from member organizations without staff or resources, who then pass the skills on in their own countries, supported by online tools and volunteers. The future of physiotherapy depends on where you stand, from New York to Mali, but the guests describe it as bright. WCPT has 109 member organizations and is working toward including China and Russia. Work with the International Committee of the Red Cross and the World Health Organization aims to bring physical therapists into the acute phase of disaster response to help with triage and early rehabilitation. As advice to their younger selves, one guest values consolidating skills rather than moving too quickly between jobs; the other urges holding on to a goal even when the path is unclear, and reaching out to people you admire for help.
