This lecture will present current evidence on the effects of exercise therapy as treatment of knee osteoarthritis and specific recommendations on type of exercise, number of supervised sessions, pain during exercise and target population (part 1). Furthermore, the lecture will describe the implementation model, content and results of the implementation program Good Life with osteoArthritis from Denmark (GLA:D®), a 8-week education and exercise therapy program for knee and hip osteoarthritis implemented in Denmark, Canada, Australia, China, Switzerland, with more countries to come (part 2). Finally, examples of neuromuscular exercises from GLA:D® is presented by physiotherapist Sarah Kroman (part 3).
Learning objectives
> You should be able to discuss exercise as treatment of knee osteoarthritis based on current evidence, and pinpoint some important recommendations with the use of exercise on knee osteoarthritis.
> You should be able to address how exercise as treatment of knee osteoarthritis can be implemented in clinical practice by the use of GLA:D®.
> You should be able to consider the use some of the neuromuscular exercises from GLA:D® in your own clinical practice.
Discover why proven exercise treatment for knee osteoarthritis is still underused—and how the GLA:D model is changing that through clinician training, patient education, and long-term follow-up. Learn how this practical approach improves pain, function, quality of life, and even reduces sick leave.
Learn three practical lower-body exercises used in physiotherapy to build hip and knee stability, improve control, and strengthen key supporting muscles. You’ll pick up simple technique cues, common form mistakes to avoid, and easy ways to increase the challenge safely.
Discover why exercise is a first-line treatment for knee osteoarthritis, often matching or outperforming pain medication while improving function with minimal risk. Learn which approaches work best, why programs should be individualized and supervised, and how to manage pain during exercise with confidence.
Discover how exercise, education, and weight management form the foundation of effective knee osteoarthritis care, and why they should come before surgery. Learn what the GLAD program reveals about turning strong evidence into real-world results that reduce pain, improve function, and support lasting change.
