Experiential learning

The section focuses on using metaphors and experiential learning in physiotherapy practice. A key message is to listen carefully for the metaphors patients naturally use, then explore them with more confidence to uncover possible meanings and solutions. Learners are encouraged to practise this process themselves so they can apply it more effectively in clinical conversations. Another main idea is that learning happens through experience rather than through explanation alone. Kolb’s experiential learning cycle is introduced through four elements: doing, feeling, watching, and thinking. The aim is to help practitioners consider whether they are guiding patients through each of these stages when introducing exercises, ideas, or behaviour changes. The transcript also contrasts experiential learning with a purely information-based approach. Using the example of a patient constantly seeking treatments, it shows two possible responses: simply telling the patient to stop and do less, or using a more experience-based method to help them recognise the pattern themselves. The section ends by preparing learners for a roleplay that demonstrates this second approach in practice.
