Viscera can mimic and refer pain as musculoskeletal conditions.

Bowel disorders like inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease, bowel cancer, and diverticulitis can all cause low back pain.

It is important that we consider bowel cancer and serious pathology in the bowel because as with all cancers, the sooner it is detected, it is better.

In the UK, in a year, out of almost 41000 cases, 16,000 deaths occur due to bowel cancer. About 10 to 15 % of these patients have previously seen a healthcare professional and were diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome and were not followed up.

To know more about how bowel disorders present as low back pain watch this clip taken from the lecture ‘Visceral Masqueraders’ by Chris Mercer from Trust me-Ed.
