In this talk, we examine the role of yoga as a part of an integrated, multidimensional approach to pain care.
Leaning points:
1. Understand what yoga is, using the Eight Limbs of Yoga as a framework
2. Develop an understanding of yoga for pain care from the perspective of pain neurophysiology and processing
3. Summarize the evidence for yoga in pain care
4. Develop awareness of how to integrate yoga into physiotherapy practice and/or deliver an integrated yoga pain care programme
What yoga is beyond postures, the common misconceptions that put people with pain off trying it, and the pain and yoga mandala used to link the Eight Limbs of Yoga with the contributors to pain.
The Eight Limbs of Yoga, from the yamas and niyamas to breath practice, withdrawal of the senses, focused attention, meditation and samadhi, and how each one overlaps with physiotherapy and contemporary pain care.
How pain is processed across the nervous, immune, endocrine and autonomic systems, how Melzack's pain neuromatrix frames inputs and outputs, and how yoga practices can target physical, cognitive and emotional contributors to pain.
What the evidence says about yoga for persistent pain, where yoga sits within a physiotherapist's scope of practice, and how the first week of the six-week Beyond Pain Yoga course is structured.
Weeks two to six of the Beyond Pain Yoga course, covering sensitization, body perception, thoughts and beliefs, emotional responses and allostatic load, and a feasibility study in women with persistent pain after breast cancer.
