Knee pain in middle-aged athletes and older people is often attributed to a meniscal tear, traditionally treated surgically with partial resection. This lecture discusses the development of knee arthroscopy and provides some insight into why placebo surgery can be just as effective. Today, knee arthroscopy is recommended against for this large group of patients in favor of exercise therapy which has been shown to relieve pain, and mechanical symptoms, to a similar degree at a lower cost and without adverse events.
Learning objectives
> You should be able to discuss the use of knee arthroscopy in treatment of knee pain in middle-aged athletes and older people.
> You should be able to explain the positive effects from real and fake surgery.
> You should be able address the benefits of exercise therapy on knee pain.
Discover why knee arthroscopy often offers no meaningful advantage over exercise therapy for middle-aged recreational athletes with knee pain. Learn how research is reshaping treatment decisions, challenging long-held beliefs about meniscal tears, mechanical symptoms, and the real path to recovery.
Explore why exercise and patient education are the foundation of osteoarthritis care, while many common assumptions about imaging, injections, and surgery don’t hold up under evidence. Learn how injury, pain, placebo effects, and group support shape better outcomes across the full journey from prevention to treatment.
